Ulam or traditional vegetables is commonly consumed by the Malay and specific Asian populations and has been reported to be rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. Some of the ulam have been used as medicinal plants or therapeutic agents as it contains high polyphenol and antioxidant content. As the older adults' population is substantially increasing in Malaysia, various health issues are expected to increase, such as cognitive decline and mood disorders. Preventive strategies are crucial and timely to overcome these issues. Ulam has been shown to be beneficial towards improving brain function and preventing diseases related to aging It is recommended to consume at least 30 g or one cup preferably daily to reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. Previous studies, which have been discussed in thick, showed that ulam particularly ulam raja (cosmos caudatus) has the potential to exhibit beneficial effects toward improvement in cognitive function and mood status. With its high content of antioxidants and flavonoids, ulam raja has been shown to confer protection against cognitive decline. Generally, ulam is easily accessible and affordable for the local community to purchase, plant and consume in Malaysia. Various strategies and approaches should be conducted in order to improve knowledge on the benefits of ulam intake, and subsequently, improve its intake in the community. The results of studies can be used as evidence to encourage communities towards a healthy lifestyle and ageing, improve nutritional status, and improve quality of life by reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases and other disease.
